Democracy Forward seeks a content strategist who will help to execute the organization’s mission of using the law to advance the promise of democracy and social progress in the United States. This position will support Democracy Forward’s mission to educate, engage, and inspire the public and stakeholders on issues affecting democratic values. To be successful in this role, the ideal candidate will have exceptional writing and editing skills and a drive to impact social progress in this pivotal year. The ideal candidate will have experience writing persuasive, factual, precise, and effective products for a variety of audiences, including by distilling complex legal and policy issues for lay audiences. The candidate must be able to work with urgency in a fast-paced environment and effectively manage multiple issues and projects simultaneously.

The ideal  candidate will demonstrate an organizational mindset,strategic thinking, and have experience working to advance policies that have a positive impact on historically and currently marginalized communities.  The candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to inclusion, equity, and justice and will seek to advance the organization’s values both internally and externally.  

Key responsibilities:
  • Write talking points and other communications products that communicate the substance of Democracy Forward’s work and that ensure quality and consistency of brand identity, narrative, tone, and personality through the media and across all channels (website, social media, email, mobile, video, print, in-person).
  • Assist in the creation of high-quality content including by translating complex legal and policy issues for lay audiences, including but not limited to, website content, print materials, funder materials, decks for presentations.
  • Assist in managing strategic partner relationships to facilitate and coordinate communications-related efforts.
  • Assist in drafting materials for media engagement, including pitches, statements, press releases, talking points, and any other relevant materials.
  • Draft op-eds and other editorial pieces to be pitched to major publications on behalf of the organization’s staff, strategic partners, and clients.
  • Create one-pagers with case backgrounds and toplines for internal use in the development of materials. Liaise with the legal team to ensure cross-team coordination and approval of draft materials.
  • Assist with updates to the website or digital channels, as needed or assigned.

Qualifications 

  • 3-5 years experience with press, digital content creation, writing for multiple audiences
  • Ability to communicate complex issues to all audiences via digital channels and long-form writing
  • Exceptional editing skills and a keen eye for detail.
  • Comfort working with information such as legal issues and litigation, and an interest in making this content accessible to the public
  • Communicative team-player capable of setting goals and measuring progress
  • Commitment to building successful outcomes and taking ownership over a growing program and team
  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute affirmatively to a working environment of equity, justice, and inclusion

The salary range for this position is $70,000-80,000 plus excellent benefits. Compensation is commensurate with experience.
