THE OPPORTUNITY: Engineering Manager

REPORTS TO: Director of Engineering

LOCATION: Hybrid (NY or LA preferred) 

Birdy Grey is looking for an eCommerce focused Engineering Manager to hire, grow, and manage a new engineering team. This role will be responsible for building a team to launch new features on our Shopify ecommerce storefront. This is a hands-on people management role where your time will be spent mentoring direct reports, managing engineering tasks, writing code, scoping, planning, and strategizing.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Shape the engineering hiring process and build out a small team
  • Conduct regular 1:1s, goal setting exercises, and performance reviews
  • Navigate challenges and support career development of direct reports
  • Lead agile processes such as daily standup, backlog grooming, sprint planning, etc
  • Implement engineering support and software release processes 
  • Work closely with ecommerce, marketing, and data teams to execute enhancements and features
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable accessibility standards, per WCAG 2.1 
  • Ensure compliance with all privacy frameworks (GDPR, CCPA, etc)
  • Lead and promote a culture of impeccable documentation across all code bases
  • Identify and mitigate risks throughout development lifecycles and iterative sprints
  • Foster a culture focused on test driven development and QA
  • Collaborate with Director of Engineering on managing technical roadmap
  • Collaborate with Product and Product Design on requirements, feasibility, tradeoffs and Product roadmap

THE RIGHT CANDIDATE: QUALIFICATIONS & PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s Degree Required 

EXPERIENCE / REQUIREMENTS:

  • 6+ years in software engineering
  • 2+ years in a people leadership role
  • Experience managing 3+ direct reports
  • Experience implementing and leading Agile processes 
  • Expert level JavaScript, CSS, HTML, Liquid
  • Expert level knowledge of software engineering best practices and processes 
  • Experience with modern JavaScript frameworks (React, Remix, Next.js, etc.)
  • Experience with Node, Python or Ruby
  • Experience with Shopify plus and it’s ecosystem
  • Experience with marketing & analytics pixels, google tag manager, marketing technology operations
  • Experience working with ERPs and integration engineering
  • Experience with various cloud services & architectures (GCP preferred)
  • Experience working closely with marketing and data teams on implementing and maintaining pixels and web events, both client-side and server-side
  • Experience optimizing the teams workflow and efficiency
  • Experience effectively influencing, building trust, and collaborating cross-functionally 
  • Hard working and willing to roll sleeves up - no job is too big or too small.
  • You have an entrepreneurial spirit. You thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced, fluid environment. You are comfortable with ambiguity and take initiative to lead projects.

  • Start-up experience 
  • Scrum Master or similar certifications

New York Candidates only*: Minimum full-time salary range is generally between $100,000 - $170,000 + bonus + benefits. We continually review ranges to address skills, experience and markets. Base salaries are determined during our interview process, by assessing a number of factors that include, but aren’t limited to a candidate’s experience and skills relative to the scope and responsibilities of the position. *Note: Disclosure as required by NY Law (11-1-22) of the minimum salary compensation for this role when being hired as an employee in New York.
