The Alumni Success Program has the opportunity to close the achievement gap for low-income students while collaborating with a joyful team of educators committed to helping our students persist through college.

Alpha is committed to ensuring that every student is prepared and ready to get to and through college. To accomplish this, Alpha Public Schools has established an Alumni Success Program that focuses on providing intensive support for our college students to receive assistance in navigating college. As a College Mentor, you are seen as a guiding  figure who will support our alumni in different content areas depending on their specific needs in college. College Mentors have the ability to assist alumni students toward academic and personal excellence that will reach far beyond their college years. As a College Mentor, you are an active participant in the learning, growth, and personal development of our students who are off in college reaching their goals.

We are seeking passionate individuals who embody Alpha’s mission, vision and core beliefs: mentors who believe that all students can learn, that our scholars belong in college, and that student growth is an “all hands on deck” approach. At Alpha, you will uphold a belief that all students can succeed with the right support. Alpha is focused on supporting our college students as they grow into self-reliant leaders who will achieve success in their school, college, and career. 

What you’ll do… 

Guide college students in their college careers and work through activities such as: 

  • Assisting in registering for classes
  • Financial Aid Application Assistance
  • Encouraging students to attend office hours and tutoring sessions
  • Forming Study Groups if applicable
  • Assist in teaching aspects of college readiness, such as study skills, time management, and organizational skills 
  • Assisting with setting goals and milestone with your caseload, and providing follow ups with students as necessary to ensure they are meeting their goals
  • Allowing students to shoulder the responsibility for their own active learning while guiding them with strategies that they will become accustomed to using independently in college
  • Assist in developing a resource file of enrichment materials for use in tutorial sessions. 
  • Attend Professional Development as required by supervisor

Build Relationships with our College students and passionate staff 

  • Reach out to the college students and establish yourself as a mentor and guide
  • Assist the Alumni Advisor as requested, such as contacting college students regarding schedules, financial aid award letters, grades, etc. 
  • Communicate regularly with the Alumni Advisor regarding college student progress and areas of concern.

Provide leadership and character development 

  • Reinforce the idea that learning extends far beyond mere studying to form the basis for long term accomplishments. 
  • Acknowledge the individuality of all Alpha Alumni  students and work to develop their academic and personal pride. 
  • Set an example of personal excellence and high expectations for Alpha Alumni students to follow.

You possess… 

  • A High School Diploma--Required 
  • Currently enrolled in college or university, or a recent graduate–Required 
  • 2.5 cumulative GPA or higher and on track to transfer/graduate
  • You are an alumni of Alpha Public Schools
