The Operations Assistant Supervisor reporting to the Supervisor is responsible for leading Cando’s switching team in Vaughan, Ontario. The Supervisor is responsible for managing all functions that are performed by the team including planning and coordination of switching and production requirements, switching of intermodal railcars, communications with our customer, and hosting contractors regarding rail yard operations, quality control, and continuous process improvement.

General Responsibilities

Safety

  • Manages day to day operations ensuring employees are complying with standard operating procedures and maintains safe work practices and conditions
  • As required, completes incident investigations, identifying root causes, and formulating action plans
  • Acts as a leader in safe work practices; responsible for the mentoring of employees in all aspects of safe railway operations

Planning & Service Delivery

  • Ensures the employees are providing service in keeping with Cando’s vision and guides the department in developing and maintaining plans for continuing operations
  • Develops and manages the Cando-Vaughan Team to achieve customer switching production targets and a high level of customer satisfaction
  • Ensures efficient work systems and procedures are in place for the project and helps employees make adjustments if necessary
  • Builds and maintains positive and healthy relationships will all stakeholders and promotes harmonious employee/customer/contractor relations while guiding and coaching employees and supervisors
  • Works closely with customer managers to manage work interfaces, remove constraints, and optimize production schedules for loading, switching, and shipping intermodal containers

Leadership & Employee Development

  • Leads others in adapting to innovative work environments and ensures awareness on division initiatives, decisions, policies, etc. is communicated
  • Provides supervision and qualified crews for the operation of customer locomotives within the terminal yard for the purpose of switching railway flatcars
  • Promotes harmonious employee relations while guiding and coaching employees, supervisors, and other managers
  • Prepares and implements employee development plans; ensures all employees have adequate training to contribute fully to the project
  • Conducts the required amount of efficiency tests on Cando employees as set out in the Vaughan Safety Plan; conduct crew observations and training
  • Influences and inspires others to achieve company objectives while building and maintaining positive and healthy relationships

Management and Administration

  • Manages the day-to-day operations 
  • Oversees equipment and office repair and maintenance
  • Builds and fosters a relationship with customer management at Vaughan and the GTA
  • Manages the relationship between its operations employees and its customers

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Communicates effectively both orally and in writing with people of all backgrounds, levels of comprehension including managers, employees, customers, and the public
  • Demonstrates an entrepreneurial spirit and an ability to lead and motivate employees
  • Capable in employee development, coaching, performance management and dealing with performance issues in a unionized and production environment
  • Proficient in a Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook with the skill to adapt easily to other software systems
  • Knowledge of railway switching operations and logistical systems and procedures
  • Ability to obtain and maintain CROR certification, a valid provincial driver’s license, safety critical medical status, eRailsafe, and meet all safety and customer requirements
  • Ability to work flexible hours to accommodate 24/7 operational requirements and on occasion, provide replacement crew coverage; coordinate hours with another Supervisor

Education & Experience

  • Experience in managing for efficiency and effectiveness to bring about change in a fast-paced environment
  • Minimum of five (5) years in a progressive leadership position preferable in the industrial switching and/or rail environment
