The Switchperson/Trackmobile Operators with are responsible for providing safe and efficient rail car switching services at a customer site in Hay River, NWT. Working in a fast-paced, customer oriented environment, the Switching crew must work in teams to maximize efficiency and safety, while demonstrating a strong initiative and organizational skills.
Roles and Responsibilities
The incumbent works in a team environment to provide safe and effective switching services. Responsibilities include:
- Ensure safe operation of the trackmobile and train movements including conducting clear and concise job briefings
- Apply rules, special instructions, and switching procedures while operating as a trackmobile operator/conductor including operating switches and derails, coupling and uncoupling rail cars including air hoses, applying and releasing handbrakes; provide protection of train, track, and equipment
- Comply with all applicable operating rules, switching procedures and regulations imposed by government, the customer, and/or Cando; practice and promote safe work habits
- Keep the interior of the trackmobile safe, clean, and tidy; complete daily inspection and testing of the trackmobile brakes and safety devices
- Promptly report all safety, equipment, and track problems to the Supervisor; complete daily reports, daily logs, and other reports deemed necessary
- Exert “best effort” to protect human life, human safety and company property
- Actively participate with the team and provide excellent customer service while promoting a superior company image; participate in training or company initiatives as required
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Excellent teamwork skills; strong customer service skills
- Ability to read and write general documentation including safety briefings and switching lists; read and comprehend policy and procedure manuals
- Physically fit including the ability to pull self-up and down from a railcar on a continuous basis, able to lift and twist air hoses, able to secure rail car brakes, derails, and switches
- Knowledge with technology and computer systems with a willingness to use Excel and Outlook on a daily basis
- Strong problem solving and decision making abilities
- Ability to work in all weather conditions for extended periods of times
- Ability to obtain required certification and safety critical medical clearance including clear drug and alcohol testing
Education & Experience
- Experience as an operator or switchperson is an asset however training will be provided for the right candidate
- Ability to hold and maintain CROR certification
