The Mechanic will work independently and/or in a small team environment repairing and servicing various types of construction and railway equipment. The work will be carried out in field environments and requires travel throughout Prairie provinces. Cando also provides travel expenses, tool allowance $900/year, Safety Allowance $275/year, a company phone, also newer equipment supplied to mechanic. This is a full time position.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Inspect rail/construction equipment, diagnose issues, make recommendations as to course of action and repair/recondition as needed
  • Maintain, repair, and overhaul heavy construction and specialized railway equipment
  • Test, diagnose, and repair hydraulic systems, electrical systems, magnets, etc.
  • Keep accurate records of work performed
  • Troubleshoot and maintain electrical system and magnets
  • Complete welding and fabrication work
  • Maintain and care for all work areas, vehicles, and tools used to perform the equipment servicing
  • Provide quality customer service and interface with the operations teams when on site
  • Promote and guide others to understand the daily requirements to effectively service and maintain equipment

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload
  • Understanding of hydraulics and ability to diagnose issues; ability to read hydraulic schematics
  • Ability to lift/push/pull a minimum of fifty (50) pounds, work in confined spaces and manoeuvre in/through/around equipment easily and safely
  • Working knowledge of Cummins, Cat, Deere, and 2 & 4 stroke Detroit engines
  • Ability to meet Workplace Safety & Health standards
  • General computer skills with ability to learn new processes
  • Hold and maintain a valid driver’s license and be willing to obtain the safety and rail certifications required to access various sites
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions with tolerance to fumes and odours; ability to work in small spaces
  • Willingness to do work long hours and be away from home for extended periods of time
  • Ability to take direction and work with moderate supervision
  • Incumbents must provide and maintain their own hand tools

Education & Experience

  • Experience working with heavy industrial/construction equipment; rail equipment preferred
  • Heavy Duty Mechanic training and/or Journeyman certification an asset
  • Experience operating various equipment an asset
  • Experience with welding and fabrication an asset
