ABOUT DELTA SCULLING CENTER

Delta Sculling Center (DSC) is a non-profit organization located in the diverse port city of Stockton, CA. DSC’s mission is to provide inclusive rowing opportunities to people of all abilities. To achieve this mission, DSC has several programs aimed at serving various populations. The Freedom Rows program serves veterans with disabilities. The OarBusters program serves athletes with primarily physical and cognitive challenges including brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputation, emotional and sensory impairments. The Youth program serves middle and high school students and is offered regardless of the youth’s ability to pay.  Finally, the Masters program serves adults who enjoy rowing for pleasure and competition. 

DSC has a team of dedicated staff and volunteers, largely from the Masters program, who assist in each of these programs.  DSC offers an inclusive, close-knit, and supportive community to both its participants and individuals within the broader community who express interest.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Executive Director, reporting directly to the Board of Directors, will assume a pivotal role in overseeing the comprehensive management and leadership of the organization. This multifaceted position encompasses responsibilities in operations, programming, partnerships, advocacy, fundraising, communications, and financial management. Leveraging a background in grant writing and fundraising, the successful candidate will employ the art of storytelling to effectively engage new partners, donors, and community members.

In close collaboration with the board of directors and key stakeholders, the Executive Director will spearhead the development of a strategic plan and roadmap, aligning with the organization's broader vision. As Delta Sculling Center enjoys an excellent reputation in the community, the incoming Executive Director will be entrusted with upholding the positive organizational culture while expanding its impact by reaching a broader audience through enhanced program participation.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Organizational Leadership, Strategy & Administration

  • Serve as a general manager for employees and volunteers and oversee day-to-day operations, including planning, goal setting, fundraising, operations, programming, partnerships, advocacy, communications, and growth.
  • In partnership with the Board of Directors, establish and implement a strategic plan that aligns DSC with a long-term vision focused on growth.
  • Ensure that DSC makes consistent and timely progress towards its goals.
  • Establish performance guidelines and expectations for all employees, providing feedback and regular reviews.
  • Handle human resources responsibilities, including hiring, training, supervising, monitoring, and retaining competent and qualified employees.      
  • Cultivate a work environment that recruits, retains and supports quality staff and coaches, focusing on morale and organizational culture.
  • Keep the Board fully informed on programming and fiscal sustainability, while identifying challenges, issues, and opportunities. Cultivate Board member development and access additional networks for recruitment.

Financial Management & Fundraising

  • Work with the Board to establish a financial strategy that ensures sustainability, healthy cash flow and adequate reserves.
  • Create, monitor, evaluate and report on the annual budget and audit.
  • Oversee payroll processing, maintain payroll records, and ensure proper filing of state and federal payroll taxes.
  • Manage accounts payable and receivable, oversee the preparation of bank deposits, and maintain accurate financial records.
  • Devise and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy, prioritizing the cultivation of individual donors, corporations, and foundation funding.
  • Foster meaningful and mutually beneficial relationships with individual donors, corporations, and foundation partners.
  • Contribute to the researching, writing, and acquiring of grants that align with DSC’s mission & populations served.

Communications & Public Relations

  • Promote the image of DSC through effective marketing materials and social media presence.  
  • Serve as a liaison and advocate between DSC and donors, partners, elected officials, press, and other community members.
  • Foster relationships with other nonprofits, educational leaders, foundations, government agencies, and other influential people to promote the work of DSC and identify new funding sources.      
  • Host occasional events, which may include dinners and award ceremonies. Work with paid or volunteer project managers to produce events for specific programs.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent demonstrated management experience required.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in nonprofit organizational leadership or other business management positions in a variety of capacities.
  • Successful experience writing grants and cultivating relationships with individual donors and foundations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational and interpersonal skills, especially the ability to work with youth and adults from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience with recruiting and managing volunteers from diverse backgrounds.
  • Experience planning and executing community events.
  • Experience with Google Drive, Office Suite, customer relationship management systems, and experience in social media and public relations to promote DSC programs.
  • Experience in developing budgets and monitoring financial activity.
  • Ability to supervise a small staff of full- and part-time employees and interns and to cultivate a team of volunteers.
  • Familiarity with the Stockton or a similar community and the challenges faced by local youth and their families.
  • Rowing, physical education or experience in a fitness-related field is a plus, but not required.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

This is a full-time salaried, at-will position located in Stockton, CA. The Executive Director role is hybrid, requiring local travel within the Stockton area. Salary range is $90,000 - $110,000. The Executive Director will be encouraged and supported to continue his/her own development as a nonprofit manager and leader. We will also consider support for health insurance/housing/travel stipend as needed.
