We’re looking for a Director, Design Operations to join our team in North America. Growth, at scale, is linked to building trust, partnership and allyship. A natural leader, this role focuses on the processes, methods, tooling and culture associated with high-performing design teams. You will apply your breadth of your experience to unblock product, content and system designers and enable them to deliver high quality design, at scale. 

What you’ll be doing:

  • Elevates the craft and quality of the designers in the organizations through at-scale methods. 
  • Ensures teams have everything they need to work effectively, including tools, skill-training, and process documentation. 
  • Interacting as an equal party to senior leaders in Product and Engineering. Implement or drive required changes needed for teams to be operating efficiently.
  • Fosters collaboration between multiple Design systems with a focus on the healthy evolution, contribution model and documentation of the systems.
  • Standardize designer tooling; Identifies and negotiates new tooling contracts. 
  • Creates and maintains automated reports, dashboards about the design team and the impact they have to the business. 
  • Drives the engagement and culture of the team through knowledge sharing, workshops with efficacy and formal communication. Coordinates cross-user type info-sessions. 
  • Develops trust across the entire organization, and can leverage relationships in the industry to benefit the team. Builds and connects cross-functional teams.
  • Manage teams that deliver at scale (content, services). 

What you need to bring:

  • At least 7 years of practical experience influencing a design culture of excellence across geographies (2-3 time zones) managing operations for mid-large scale design teams (50+ population).  
  • Minimum 4 years of industry experience in a people management role on a Design team. Enterprise experience is a must. 
  • An acute self-awareness and deep empathy - for both the customer and your team’s goals. 
  • A tenured, evolutionary perspective on design methodologies at scale, for business impact in partnership with cross-functional stakeholders in eng and product 
  • Applied experience with cross-platform design methods & programs (ie: opportunity discovery, journey mapping) with a goal to up-level design at scale. 
  • An appetite (and the skill) for working across all digital and physical manifestations of what we design
  • Experience moderating workshops inclusive of mix-level audiences: Executives, product managers, and engineers to understand why user-centered approaches help deliver stronger solutions.
  • Excellent communication and presentation. You can bring internal stakeholders on your design journey and support your decisions with focus and brevity. 
  • A deep curiosity and ability to consider product strategy and vision. You don’t just care about “how it looks,” or “what we should design,” but “why are we designing this at all?”
  • Expertise in delivery software (Figma) and collaboration software (Jira, Monday, Miro, Figjam) and understanding of systems software (Storybook).

At Lightspeed, we carefully consider a wide range of factors when determining compensation, including your skillset, qualifications, experience, and market data. These considerations can cause your compensation to vary. We reasonably expect the base salary for this position to be in the range of $157,000 - $225,000 USD, depending on the candidate’s location. Additionally, this role may be eligible for discretionary short-term and long-term incentives. Lightspeed also provides a variety of employee benefits including, but not limited to, medical, dental, wellness, life and disability insurance, 401K plan and match, paid parental leave top-up, and paid time off. 

Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within the United States, and refers to the amount Lightspeed is willing to pay at the time of this posting, which may vary depending on the candidate’s actual location. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.
