Description:
As a Integrative Baseball Performance (IBP) Associate, you help shape The Phillies Baseball Operations and Performance strategies by processing, analyzing, and interpreting large and complex data. A large part of your job will be spent operating our Pitching and Hitting Lab in Clearwater, Florida. You will set up, calibrate and troubleshoot equipment to ensure accurate capture of force plate and motion capture data. Once processed, you will assist with generating reports and analysis as directed by the Director of Integrative Baseball Performance. You will be asked to take data in its rawest form and turn it into information for our coaching staff that is easy to understand and implement with our players.

As an associate, you will work collaboratively with other analysts, software engineers, field staff, IBP, and other cross-functional partners across the Baseball Operations department to develop a holistic approach to player development.  

Responsibilities: 

  • Set up, calibrate and troubleshoot equipment to ensure accurate capture of force plate and motion capture data
  • Integrate new and innovative technology and using it to define ideal performance for athletes throughout The Phillies organization
  • Use a combination of biomechanics and data analytics to provide metrics that will be of use to our training and strength and conditioning staffs
  • Collaborate with partners across Integrative Baseball Performance and our R&D department on Technology validation, research, and vetting
  • Work cross-functionally between the Integrative Baseball Performance team and the QA team with their projects by providing guidance and feedback on your areas of expertise within baseball, statistics, data visualization, and programming
  • Continually enhance your knowledge of baseball and data science through reading, research, and discussion with your teammates and the rest of the front office

Required Qualifications: 

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Biomechanics, or a related field
  • Experience working in a high performance environment with a focus on biomechanical research and data
  • Meaningful work experience with statistical software (R, S-Plus, SAS, or similar), databases, and scripting languages such as Python or SQL
  • Proven willingness to learn new techniques
  • Willingness to work as part of a team on complex projects; being humble empathetic, and growth-minded are must-have characteristics

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Possess or are pursuing a BS, MS or PhD in Statistics or related (e.g., mathematics, physics, or ops research) or equivalent practical experience
  • Experience operating and analyzing force plate data and markerless motion capture are a plus
  • Experience drawing conclusions from data, communicating those conclusions to decision makers, and recommending actions
  • Deep understanding of statistics, including supervised and unsupervised learning, regularization, model assessment and selection, model inference and averaging, ensemble methods
  • Experience with data visualization in tools such as R-Shiny or Python Dash
