We are seeking a passionate and motivated individual to join us in our quest to develop the next generation of CRISPR-based therapeutics. The current role is for a Laboratory Operations Manager to join our team and advance our platform. The candidate will support a highly diverse research organization and act as the point contact for all laboratory operations.  The Lab Operations Manager will be a vital part of the Scribe team, maintaining the laboratory space and assisting the Scientists, Engineers and Research Associates and working cross-functionally with Facility, HR and Finance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Seeking an outstanding and energetic Lab Operations Manager to oversee daily operations in our R&D labs, including safety and compliance, procurement, and routine equipment maintenance.
  • This individual will be the main point of contact for lab staff and leadership, managing service requests, task assignment, training, and budgeting.
  • The role is key in preparing our labs and facilities for future growth and ensuring efficient operation across the organization.
  • Oversee all aspects of daily lab operations, safety, and compliance and, in collaboration with lab leadership, proactively identify and resolve risks/issues.
  • Partner with EHS consultants to ensure that safety takes priority and develop procedures and processes to ensure our labs and employees are operating safely at all times and compliant with all environmental and safety regulations, including Federal, State and/or City regulations.
  • Head our internal safety committee, manage relevant documentation, organizational systems, OSHA compliance.
  • Oversee handling and disposal of hazardous chemical and biomedical waste.
  • Establish internal practices to obtain quotes, submit contracts for legal review, place orders, prepare for location set-up (preparation of bench space, request IT support on computer and network, request facilities support on utilities), manage equipment delivery, installation, and set-up for internal use.
  • Establish relationships with external vendors for efficient procurement and reliable supply.
  • Receive and track deliveries, as well as maintaining an inventory of commonly used consumables and reorder as needed.
  • Monitor and maintain lab equipment, manage routine repairs/calibrations, and handle service contract renewals and upgrades.
  • Oversee internal training to ensure safety and participate in onboarding of new hire members.
  • Work with Finance and Research Leadership teams for lab operating budget, CapEx strategy, and execution.
  • Collaborate with R&D team for appropriate storage, documentation, and processing of samples.
  • Help strategize, coordinate, and execute all large-scale facility changes, including lab reorganizations and/or expansions.
  • Anticipate, troubleshoot, manage and resolve wet-lab problems, develop and execute strategy for any off-hours emergency responses

Required Skills and Background:

  • The ideal candidate should be well-organized, adaptable, creative, and skilled in managing a dynamic startup environment
  • BS or higher degree in life sciences, with at least 3 years of experience in lab operations, preferably in an industry environment
  • In-depth experience in establishing and managing lab set-up and ongoing operations.
  • Experience in relocating lab equipment, chemicals, and biological materials.
  • Knowledge and skill in the application of physical containment requirements for safely working with biohazardous material.
  • Up-to-date understanding of lab safety and EH&S policies as mandated by local, state, and federal government bodies. 
  • Excellent analytical skills and flexibility in resolving complex lab issues under tight deadlines.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with a team-oriented attitude.

Physical Demands

May include frequent bending, standing, stooping, walking, talking, sitting/driving for long periods of time and pulling/pushing of instrumentation/parts can also be expected. Incumbent must be able to lift up to 30 pounds routinely throughout the work day. Will also be required from time to time to assist in lifting heavier equipment. Incumbent must have use of hand to finger senses, in order to use and grasp hand tools to repair instrumentation. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.

Preferred Skills and Background:

  • General knowledge of laboratory terminology, equipment, and procedures; arithmetic, including proportions, percentages and decimals, and college algebra
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment issues and a familiarity with computer systems
  • Ability to supervise others

At the time of posting, the base pay wage range for this role is $90,000-120,000 per year.  The offered pay range will depend on internal equity and the candidate’s relevant skills, experience, qualifications, training, and market data.  Additional incentives are provided as part of the complete package in addition to comprehensive medical and other benefits.
